Kruse & Co. Cigars and General fancy goods, mostly made in

Germany. The stock was disposed of and the tobacconist business

is being carried on, it is believed, with Chinese capital.

Melchers & Co. Did a very large business both in Exports and

Imports. Agents for the Norddeutscher Lloyd. Their Office in

Canton still exists, but their goods are probably passed in and

out under Chinese names. This firm is particularly bitter

against the English as is shown by their correspondence. One

letter from Bremen winding up "Gott Straff England". The

Hongkong partner now a prisoner is one of the most objectionable

of the number. This is the gentleman to whom the Colonial

Secretary's letter was addressed.

Radeoker & Co. had considerable stocks on hand at the outbreak

of hostilities. For many years they held the contract to

supply Younger's beer to the Military authorities for the use

of the garrison as they were able to underquote British firms

who endeavoured to obtain the contract.

This firm had a number of Chinese who had been trained

by them in Germany and were sent through China as Commercial

Agents.

These Chinese have not been employed since the war

began but are still being paid their salaries by the liquidatore.

It has been suggested that this should be discontinued and it is

hoped the liquidatore will act on the suggestion, but it is

understood they consider they will have to refer the matter to

the Hongkong Government.

Reuter Brockelmann & Co. Stocks not very large are gradually

cleared off. Their export business in Canton is now being

conducted under the name of Alfred Richter, who is registered

as an American citizen. This gentleman was formerly R.B.&Co's

Agent in New York.

Bander, Wieler & Co. Agents for Austrian Lloyd. This firm

had very large stocks at the beginning of the war which will

probably take another 7 months to dispose of. As the money is collected it is deposited in a British Bank, of this £11,000
